A number of online courses and webinars have been developed by the NIHR Coordinating Centre, to help in the delivery of COVID-19 studies and to upskill our clinical colleagues who may be required to help with delivering this research.

COVID -19 Vaccine trials training matrix
The NIHR has developed a COVID-19 Vaccine trials training matrix with links to recommended, desirable and optional training resources for individuals who are or may be involved in vaccine studies.
Your research team lead should be able to advise you on which training you need to complete. This may be dependent on the role you have in each study and any training you have already undertaken in previous roles.
We are pleased to announce the launch of a new resource on NIHR Learn to support staff through the COVID-19 pandemic. The list of resources will provide useful guidance and support in the following areas:
- Conveying Difficult Information to patients and relatives
- Leading in uncertain times
- Personal resilience
- Remote working
- Understanding the science of COVID-19
- Wellbeing
Fundamentals of Clinical Research Delivery for Laboratory Staff has been added to NIHR Learn.This training is appropriate for laboratory staff working to support research delivery. The course can be found in the GCP Online section of NIHR Learn or by using the quick link menu on the home page learn.nihr.ac.uk.
NHS training videos available on the SBK Healthcare channel
SBK Healthcare are currently providing free support and training webinars for the NHS.
You can now view their webinars from April on their YouTube channel. Each video lasts up to one hour and topics include:
- How to Sleep Better during COVID-19
- Managing Burnout for Frontline Staff
- Team Leaders' Guide to Staff Wellbeing
- Managing Conflict on the NHS Frontline
- Building Resilience for Redeployment
- Managing Anxiety at Work
The themes for this current series are: Ethics, Study Design, Special Patient Groups and Patient and Public Involvement. There is an opportunity for learners to discuss their thoughts or ask questions using a discussion forum. Florence Nightingale Foundation’s free leadership course
Nurses are being offered places on a free leadership programme intended to support them through the COVID-19 crisis.
The Nightingale Frontline NHS leadership support service has been launched in response to ‘the additional and extraordinary leadership responsibilities’ of nurses and midwives at all levels of organisations during and after the pandemic. Find out more about the course here.
NIHR MOOC (Massive Open Online Course)
The NIHR MOOC ‘Improving Healthcare through Clinical Research’ is now available. The course is particularly useful for clinical colleagues or volunteers with an interest in research. The course covers the history, theory and practice of clinical research. Although it is not specifically focused on the needs of COVID-19 research, several sections are highly relevant. ‘What is Health Research?’ is another Massive Open Online Course, that has been designed in collaboration with the University of Leeds Digital Education Service and Futurelearn. The three-week course is aimed at patients, public, carers and anyone keen to explore the world of health research. Learners can complete the course at their own pace. Read more here.
New learning resources available now
Introduction to The Clinical Research Network; this course will help orient you to the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN). It is aimed at a range of people working in research delivery and management roles and provides an overview of the NIHR and the CRN.
Introduction to Research; this course provides key information for new staff starting a career in research or staff wanting to know more about the delivery of research. The resources are modular which means you can easily get to the information you want and work at your own pace.

Informed Consent & PI Essentials webinar sessions
You can register an expression of interest for attending the 'Informed Consent' and/or 'PI Essentials' webinar sessions by clicking the links on the NIHR Learn homepage.
The initial approach will be to set up the webinars at a frequency and date/time that is best for the registrants. If numbers are significant a fixed schedule may be adopted at a later date.
Introduction to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and ‘Fundamentals’
Following the Delegation and Training Decision Aid, anyone with freedom to act on the delegation log should complete ‘Introduction to Good Clinical Practice (GCP)’, followed by any appropriate additional training. You can access GCP courses via NIHR Learn.
For staff without freedom to act it may be appropriate to complete a ‘Fundamentals’ orientation training delivered by experienced members of the study teams.
The Coordinating Centre has created an ‘Informed Consent Fundamentals for Observational Studies’ eLearning course. Please note that staff who have completed ‘Introduction to Good Clinical Practice (GCP)’ are unlikely to be asked to complete this training.

All protocol training requirements should be instructed by study sponsors and Trust R&D departments.
