Prior to COVID-19 the research nurses in the team were mainly working in primary care and community care settings. We were out and about on a daily basis, seeing participants and working with community teams.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">When COVID-19 hit all of those routine studies were paused and we were then working from home. A lot of the time we were making sure our mandatory training was up to date and upskilling ready for the COVID-19 studies that were coming online. We all had to develop ways of keeping in contact through online methods, to make sure everybody knew what was going on and what training courses were available that would help us with the future.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">When the COV001 vaccine study opened in Bristol, we assisted our clinical research practitioners with the pre-screening calls. There were lots of people who volunteered to take part in this pivotal study and we’re so grateful to them. We had to phone the volunteers who had registered an interest, to check if they were eligible and then book them in for their screening appointment.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">Following this, I spent a week working on the randomisation visits with my colleagues from the CRN, the women and children’s team and the medical research unit nurses team. The days were very busy and we had many patients to help through the process of their visit. This involved doing bloods and observations, both before and after the vaccine, and supporting them throughout the day to make it an efficient, pleasant and professional experience. The three teams of nurses were brought together very quickly and worked well together as one team to deliver the COVID-19 study effectively, efficiently and safely. We all supported each other and used our skills in the best possible way.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">More recently, we have also been supporting North Bristol Trust with the second stage of the study, COV002, by helping with pre-screening, screen visits and administration of the vaccines.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: medium;">It has been an amazing experience for the nurses in the CRN, we have been working with a great team and have loved collaborating with the Trusts to deliver these studies.

Our role is to allocate research staff each day, support and empower them to deliver across these studies, take referrals for potential new participants, and deal with queries. Each day starts with preparing the work for the team, briefing the team on workload for the day and other important updates, a second team brief also takes place at lunchtime to plan the afternoon work. Working collaboratively in this way has enabled us to recruit to these important COVID-19 studies. Enhancing my communication skills to deliver team huddles on a larger scale than I am used to with my peers, team members and other colleagues has been a personal challenge I have had to work on. Most of all this experience has brought together a variety of research staff to work as a large team, which has made me more aware of my colleague’s strengths. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Heart of Bath comprises three sites. We continue to run our clinical trials unit from Junction Road Surgery, where we set up once the COVID-19 Hot Hub was installed at Oldfield. Fortunately, our current workplace is very much a ‘cold site’, closed to patients and a safe environment for the research coordinator, Becky, and I. We are enjoying our new space and we’re visited regularly by our research PIs of course, yesterday for our first ever remote site initiation visit. So, remarkably even to us, with everything seemingly turned upside-down, we’re opening another research study!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To date, there are 337 sites running The PRINCIPLE Study. We received the green light to start and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">then, along with everyone else who signed up in parallel, faced the inevitable delay to receiving <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">swabs and study medication – Public Health England had a massive backlog due to huge demand all <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">at once. So, we used the time to expand our research team, with two pharmacists and one member <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">of staff working remotely now GCP certificated, trained on the study and available to help us.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We’re all focused<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> on recruiting and feeling positive about offering this opportunity to eligible <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">patients, people with COVID-19 symptoms who are sounding terribly anxious over the phone. In <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">primary care research we tend to approach patients with stable conditions and clear treatment <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">pathways, but in this situation, outcomes are unpredictable and this impacts patients’ mind-set. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How we communicate with patients and their families is so important at this time.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tomorrow I’m seeing a parent and child for the paediatric vaccine trial we’re running. This will <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">happen at St James’ Surgery, another ‘cold site’ on the other side of the river – it feels like I’m <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">becoming a peripatetic research nurse throughout this period. My favourite aspect of this trial was <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">having cuddles and playing with the babies during the 30 minutes post-vaccination observation <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">period, but safe distancing has inhibited me and sadly I’m not getting close anymore.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many things have changed; some add positivity where you wouldn’t expect to find it. I have tried to support ‘Scrubs for the NHS – Bath’ and other local ‘scrub hubs’ on social media – my son designed their logo. They are a community of volunteers, together making scrubs, hats, gowns and scrub bags for all healthcare workers who need them. They are inspirational to me, pulling together to keep us safe through this crisis. When I received my first pair of scrubs, their label made me smile. It read ‘Handmade with love: for the love of scrubs’.

We asked Shaolin Chidavaenzi, one of our Clinical Research Practitioners, to update us on what she has been working on this week.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It’s been a really busy week. As a team we’ve been working to support a number of different COVID-19 studies across the West of England.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Since the COV001 vaccine study pre-screening went live last week, the study team have received a huge number of applications from people who are interested in taking part.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are no currently licensed vaccines or specific treatments for COVID-19. The COV001 study will allow us to assess if healthy people can be protected from COVID-19 with a new vaccine. Participants will be randomly allocated to either receive the vaccine or a placebo injection and after the vaccination we will be collecting information about any symptoms that occur.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To help support the study team, myself and a few WE ReACH colleagues have been making pre-screening phone calls to check the eligibility of participants for the study. We have also been arranging appointments and organising paperwork for eligible participants to attend a screening visit.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The work we're doing will ensure that failures during the screening visits are minimised, as all ineligible people will have already been identified during the telephone pre-screening. The study has an exceptionally tight schedule so it’s really important that we work together to make sure it runs smoothly.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As a team, we have also been involved in the planning and feasibility of the vaccination aspect of this study. This week, our research nurses met with the Principle Investigator for the COV001 study to plan the vaccination clinics which will be starting next week. Our research nurses will be helping to vaccinate eligible participants once the clinics start.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Looking forward, we are also in discussions with North Bristol Trust about planning our support of the COV002 vaccine study in the future, which will be open to a larger population starting in June. This study is the follow on study from COV001 testing the same vaccine in a larger sample group.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This week, I have also undergone an induction at North Bristol Trust in order to support COVID-19 studies at Southmead Hospital, including the RECOVERY, DISCOVER, and CCP-UK studies. This means that in the event that staff from North Bristol Trust are redeployed to do research at the NHS Nightingale Bristol, our team will be able to continue research at Southmead Hospital.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">REPROVIDE is another study we are currently supporting. It is a six-year programme, which will investigate ways of improving how healthcare professionals respond to all family members experiencing or perpetrating domestic violence and abuse. This week I have been working with the study team to promote the study with sites and domestic violence services in the West of England.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I’m glad to be able to work together with the WE ReACH team and our partner organisations to contribute to the nationwide research efforts into the COVID-19 pandemic.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
As Heart of Bath Medical Partnership are preparing to contribute to research into the COVID-19 pandemic, we've asked Mary for an update on their preparations.

Here’s how her working week developed:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Thursday 02 April
A COVID-19 Hot Hub was to open in the new wing of Oldfield Surgery. To clear space for the new service, our team had to pack up and move an entire clinical trials unit in one day. Two of us packed up our entire office and treatment room into a van and relocated everything – 3 tall, lockable cupboards, a minus 20 degrees freezer, a large temperature-controlled lockable fridge, 2 centrifuges, 2 ECG machines, all our equipment, all our many boxes of study files and so on.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">Becky, our study coordinator, and I started packing before even knowing where we were relocating to, which was slightly bewildering. We were so pleased to be doing something practical to help, although by the end of the day we were both physically exhausted, as you can imagine.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">
I was feeling in awe of the staff volunteering to man the front line in the Hot Hub. Happily, there’s an outlet for this every Thursday night these days, so I clapped just a bit harder than I did the week before.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Friday 03 April
Becky and I dressed appropriately to share the message ‘Supporting findings, diagnostics, treatments and a vaccine for COVID-19’ and joined the #Red4Research conversations on Twitter and Facebook.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">We both worked our days off to finish unpacking and to fully relocate the unit to Junction Road Surgery, which is currently shut. It turns out that clinical trials had been allocated its own space, just around the corner from our original location. We even have a garden with a tree in the centre.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline;">😊

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Weekend 04 - 05 April

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Despite it being the weekend, the Primary Care Community of Practice WhatsApp group was buzzing with enthusiasm for the upcoming COVID-19 research opportunities. This group will be a useful resource for sharing information and advice so we can set-up quickly and deliver the clinical trials – the race is on to start PRINCIPLE.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Commercial research studies continue, though everything happens quite differently and depending on your sense of humour, slightly comically. This week I’m performing remote study visits, i.e. telephone calls, and afterwards, the study drug is dispensed via drive-through pick up by the patient or designated caregiver.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In reality, this involves a short walk to Oldfield Surgery car park where I meet the patients and I perform the few steps forward to deliver the IMP, few steps backwards for social distancing and the patient takes a few steps forward to pick up the IMP and leave the diary pages, then few steps backwards for social distancing, then it’s my turn to step forwards to collect the diary pages. You know this routine, it’s that one we all do at the shops now.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tuesday 07 April

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">PRINCIPLE is in set-up. Becky is speeding ahead and being her super-efficient usual self, but in this instance, the study team are turning things around at a fast pace in parallel. We’re preparing, as are many sites in the West of England and nationally, to recruit patients. It’s incredibly exciting to be involved and contributing to the evidence base for COVID-19 treatments.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It’s officially my day off. I’m writing this diary update and completing the first week of the FutureLearn course: Managing COVID-19 in General Practice. It’s mind-boggling to read and recall that the first COVID-19 death in the UK was on 05 March 2020, just over one month ago.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The course advice mirrors my previous advice about the importance of effective communication, with extra tips for active listening during remote consultations. The tone of voice is especially crucial, to reassure patients with high levels of anxiety during this pandemic.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Can you tell me a bit about your role?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I work as a research nurse in the clinical trials unit at Heart of Bath, together with an incredibly efficient study coordinator and supported by our three most research-active GPs. We’re a dedicated research team, working on a number of commercial studies for pharmaceutical sponsors, as well as on academic studies for universities.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We try to engage all our colleagues in research – often the first person approached is a receptionist, when a patient has seen a poster in the waiting room. We regularly share bite-sized information about our studies with all Heart of Bath staff, to ensure patients receive a welcoming smile when approached. Promoting research to staff and patients has always been a major part of my role as a research nurse.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have a large and varied portfolio; I might be assessing patients participating in a diabetes study, seeing a baby with their mum and dad for a paediatric vaccination study and then, gaining consent from a gentleman joining a trial involving urodynamic testing for LUTS (long-standing urinary tract symptoms). Currently, as with many clinical trial sites worldwide, we’re preparing to contribute to research into the COVID-19 pandemic.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How did you start your nursing career?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I left school at 16 with every intention of becoming a nurse, but instead went and did lots of other interesting things, which included living and working for five years in the Middle East. I eventually qualified to be a nurse as a mature student and have since gained a degree in Health and Social Care.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My first nursing role was as a theatre practitioner at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff. I enrolled on an 18 months rotation, working as a scrub nurse in most UHW theatres, each for an eight week period. Through this role, I gained experience in a number of very different specialties: ophthalmology, cardiology, gynaecology, neurology and so on. It was a valuable opportunity to gain insight into how teams work best, and it set the groundwork for the collaborative team-working I prefer and try to encourage.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My chosen specialty was cardiology. I started work at the Cardiac Centre at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) Bath, primarily in the cardiac catheterisation labs. The cath lab is an examination room with diagnostic imaging equipment that is used to visualise the arteries and chambers of the heart and treat any abnormality found. We would mainly do balloon angioplasty and stenting into coronary arteries and fit pacemakers, though we did many other procedures also.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I went on to work as a cath lab sister, co-managing a sizeable team of nurses. We carried out cardiac interventions in emergency situations, sometimes with ambulance crews bypassing the Emergency Department to bring us patients experiencing heart attacks. Coordinating the busy cath lab lists, with constant stress levels and the heavy workload pressures, was extremely challenging and probably represents the most significant challenge I have faced in my career.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How did your career in research nursing start?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There was no cardiology research team at RUH and the Trust was keen to start doing research in this area. In 2013 I went to work with the diabetes research team to find out how to run clinical trials, with the aim of setting up a dedicated cardiology research team. I learned so much from my colleagues and really appreciated the opportunity to work alongside them, as even fathoming the clinical trial acronyms seems equivalent to learning a new language. I worked with them on some fascinating diabetes clinical trials and after a while, I started to drop days with the diabetes team to build my own cardiology research portfolio.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That portfolio grew successfully, in parallel with an expanding team, to deliver the studies. Later I left to work with Dr. Ali Khavandi on the Cardiologist’s Kitchen initiative. He was awarded funding by The Health Foundation to set up an 18-month project to improve patients’ cardiovascular health through diet and exercise. This involved engaging patients with evidence-based dietary changes through social media and the project website, which though not research, was a fabulous and enjoyable innovation to be part of.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As I had been working closely with GP sites while project managing Cardiologist’s Kitchen, I decided to stay in primary care rather than return to secondary. Here we have been so productive that we’re high up the list of GP Practices running multiple studies, tenth when we last checked.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you look back on your career, is there a particular moment, time or person that really stands out?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When I look back on my career so far, it’s been the patients I’ve recruited into clinical trials who inspire me. They really engage with the research and on the whole, as far as they are able to, participate with full commitment from start to finish. I took part in studies myself before becoming a healthcare professional, so I understand something of their input and I always take time to convey how much we appreciate this and simply thank them.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is one study that stands out above all the others I have worked on, though I am not at liberty to share the results I have observed. Again, it is the patient perspective that I find so impressive and how they respond positively and contribute to help us collect good data to improve treatments, procedures and interventions in the future.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There are many reasons you may hear from patients to explain why they put themselves forward and put themselves out, often it is about giving something back to the NHS. With everything happening in the world right now, this makes so much sense.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What would you say to someone else who was thinking of starting a career as a research nurse?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As I do, take time to listen to what your patient has to say. Research Healthcare Professionals are advantaged with a little more time with their patients than other staff may have. There is evidence to show that it pays to make your interaction patient-centered rather than to follow your own agenda.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This concept is explored in the NIHR ‘Let's Talk Trials’ course, which I have co-facilitated since 2015 with another experienced research nurse, Joanna Nicklin. It is a one-day advanced communication skills course, designed for health professionals who talk to patients about participation in clinical research. One piece of advice that I never tire of hearing from Joanna, something to give confidence when approaching a patient you may wish to recruit, is that everyone deserves an opportunity to take part in research.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So, for someone starting their career as a research nurse, consider signing up to ‘Let’s Talk Trials’. Communication skills are so important in this role. When you recruit a patient you have to feel confident that you’ve shared all the relevant information and that they’ve understood the consent process thoroughly, so they know what they’ve signed up for and they will be more likely to complete the trial. The course is also a great place to meet and learn from other peoples’ experiences.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I would also recommend networking on social media. Both Facebook and Twitter have vibrant research communities where new research personnel can ask questions and experienced people will help and share advice.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

The Department of Social Work and Social Care is recruiting one fully funded, full-time, three year PhD studentship, starting in October 2020.

Falling within the Acute Care research theme, the studentship aims to support a promising researcher in the field of community-based health and social care for older people. The focus is a new community-based service in Birmingham that provides acute care to older people in care homes or their own homes, avoiding the need for hospital admission.

Examples of relevant areas of enquiry include (but are not restricted to):

How does this model compare with other ‘hospital at home’ initiatives both in the UK and internationally?

How effectively do health and social care organisations collaborate in the design and delivery of the service?

What are the implications for social care of the community-based acute service and how are these addressed by the service?

What are the experiences of older people and carers (both unpaid and paid) of the model and what can we learn from these?

Eligibility: Available to a candidate of high academic calibre who has experience in health and social care with older people and wishes to conduct doctoral level study within this field. A successful applicant will be expected to have a very good undergraduate degree: a minimum of a 2:1, preferably a first class honours. They should also hold, or expect to achieve, a very good Masters degree (at a distinction level) in a relevant subject.

Assessment: Applications will be assessed on (a) the quality of the student's academic achievements and preparedness for doctoral level study; (b) the student’s knowledge and experience of health and social care practice with older people (c) the quality of the research proposal; (d) the potential to contribute to cutting edge research.

Salary: A full scholarship covers Home/EU fees plus a living allowance of £20,707 per annum for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

For further information, please contact the supervisors:
Dr. Denise Tanner, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, Department of Social Work and Social Care
The PRES will arrive at Trusts and GP Practices on Monday 28 October 2019.
The NIHR Clinical Research Network West of England Patient Research Experience Survey (PRES) is a confidential evaluation of our research and delivery.

Now in the fourth year of delivery, it is now a High Level Objective (HLO8) with deliverable targets set and evaluated by the DHSC.

It is to be given to patients who attend a research study appointment from now until 20 March 2020.

Only one version should be completed by each patient.

Why are we doing it?
The results will help to further understand the patient experience of taking part in research and highlight areas we can make changes to enhance that experience.

Where did it come from?
The PRES was developed with partner organisations, patients and the core Clinical Research Network PPIE (Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement) team across the West of England. The questions are nationally mandated.

What are the key facts about the PRES?
The survey is confidential. Each Trust has a named PRES coordinator responsible for distribution to the research delivery staff.

Identifying the specific study with an IRAS or study acronym is not necessary. If the patient wishes to identify the study, they may do so.

Is it just for patients who are already part of a study?
No. It is for any patient attending a research-based appointment. They could be potential new participant, already in a study or in follow-up. There are children’s versions in development, building on last years’ success.

Are appointments in emergency settings included?
Where there is ‘delayed consent’ (ITU or emergency setting) patients are excluded from the PRES. The first visit (when consented retrospectively) should be the point at which these patients are offered the PRES.

Who should complete the survey when the patient lacks capacity and there is no retrospective consent?
Depending on individual circumstances, either the ‘personal consultee’ or the patient can complete the form. Also, if a carer is involved in helping a patient participate, they may complete the survey.

Who should be offered the PRES?
You can use the PRES with patients whose research appointments take place in clinic, as inpatients, on home visits and those receiving a telephone call (you can send them the survey and a prepaid envelope).

Is there any further information available?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The trial, open in the West of England and Wessex regions, aims to test whether personalised advice based on a nurse’s assessment of men’s urinary symptoms achieves improved control of symptoms over usual care.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) refer to problems with storing urine, such as increased urinary day-time frequency and urgency. Half of men over 40 years of age experience at least one LUTS, which can have a significant impact on their daily lives.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The trial initially aimed to recruit at least 24 GP practices from Bristol and Southampton, and has exceeded this target by recruiting a total of 32 GP practices.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The TRIUMPH study team gave a thank you to the CRN West of England and CRN Wessex research delivery teams, who conducted all the eligibility phone calls to over 1,600 potential participants throughout the trial.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The trial has now completed their recruitment process and are in follow-up until July 2020.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I think it was Dr Davies who wrote me a letter to ask
whether or not I would be interested. Some literature was also sent about the
study for me to read. There was no pressure or anything about taking part in
the study. It was just a matter of reading through the information I was given
and if I was interested to give Dr Davies a call back, which is what I did.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Could you tell me a
little bit about your condition and what it is like to live with your
condition?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Compared to some patients I am quite lucky as long as I
stick to using my inhaler. Most of the time I am okay however in the winter my
asthma tends to develop into a chest infection and I get quite poorly then. Over
the last couple of years it has tended to get a bit worse, so my doctors have
tried using different inhalers at different strengths. So when I was approached
about the research study I thought, ‘Oh there might be something out there that
helps me even more,’ which is the main reason I thought you know what I’ll give that a go!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Could you tell me about
the research studies you were involved with?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started with the asthma study where I was given a little
gadget that I was required to put information into daily. The information was
sent back to the staff at West Walk Surgery via a computer. I’m not very
technical but I was putting information in. I had a few visits and then at the
end of the study they sent out a feedback form to ask how I had got on with the
study. The visits were nothing major, really. The only major visits to West
Walk Surgery were right at the beginning and at the end. The visits really took
no time at all as most of the time they were keeping track of my health by the
information you were putting into the system.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also took part in another trial for irritable bowel
syndrome and that trial was even more simple, really. I was given one course of
treatment for eight weeks however you don’t know what that is, it could either
be the actual treatment itself or a placebo. You then go back to the clinic and
you are then given a further eight weeks of the treatment they are trialling.
In between the trial you are given forms to complete. Taking part in this trial
was really helpful; I could tell for myself that there was a difference before
and after treatment.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What made you decide
to take part in the research studies ?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I was contacted by phone regarding the IBS study and I think
that because I had already done the asthma study I thought, ‘Why not?’. I was
also being prescribed different treatment for IBS at the time and didn’t feel
that the treatment was working. I think this is because when I was taking part
in the asthma study I found that it was keeping the asthma at bay and did the
job. But the IBS trial in my opinion worked better than the treatment I was
previously on. The asthma trial I viewed as a trial for helping other people but
the IBS trial helped me personally. The
treatment I was trialling wasn’t actually for IBS but was for patients with
diarrhoea, but they found that it was helping people with symptoms of IBS. It
wouldn’t have have been something that they would have initially given me if I
hadn’t been on the trial. So overall I was very glad I took part in the study. I
learned more about asthma and IBS from taking part in the studies, so that was
another benefit.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What were your
expectations when you were first asked to take part in the research studies?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I wasn’t nervous about taking part in the study at all. The
staff at West Walk go through all the details with you and asked if you had any
issues regarding the study. The staff are very nice and friendly throughout the
whole process. The tests that were carried out were nothing different or
stranger than normal, it was overall very relaxed throughout. There was no
pressure to take part in the trial and they reassured me that anytime I didn’t
want to take part anymore I could opt out from taking part in the study.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Overall how did you
find the experience and would you take part in research again?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Overall I had a good experience and I think that if I was
approached about taking part in other research studies I would do it again. I
was always able to fit appointments around my lifestyle and work, so yes, I
would.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Where you aware of
the opportunity to take part in research before you were approached?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">No not really, before the asthma study I had never heard
about the opportunity to take part in research studies.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Do you think it is
important for people to take part in research and if so why?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I do think it’s important as you wouldn’t know about new
treatments if you didn’t do research and so it’s really important for people to
take part in research. Sometimes you may get an opportunity to take a course of
treatment you wouldn’t have originally have been offered. It could potentially
be given to patients in the future. I’ve said to other people with health
conditions that research might help them. I know time is precious to people but
you don’t have to go up to the clinic every day, most of the information is
collated from home. I know it may not affect me so much but say for example it
was someone who was worried about fitting appointments around their children,
it really doesn’t take a lot of your time. I found the whole experience of the
trial to be really convenient.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Would you recommend
taking part in research to others?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yes I would. I normally talk about taking part in research
at work and people seem to really be interested. My family have never really
heard of or known anybody who has taken part in research before, neither have
my work colleagues really. I had heard
about research being done within hospitals but I never knew research could be
carried out through your local GP practice and health centre that is until I
was approached about taking part in the studies.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What would you like
to see for the future of research and healthcare?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">That research continues and is more visible so that people
realising that it is going on.

The day started with an overview of Primary Care research from Phil Evans, GP & Associate Professor of General Practice and Primary Care and CRNCC National Specialty Lead, followed by Beccy Baird, Fellow In Health Policy at the King's Fund, speaking on pressures in General Practice. The third presentation of the day was from Kerry Cooper, Chief Operating Officer of Southern Hampshire Primary Care Alliance on developing Primary Care networks.

Following the presentations, attendees participated in a workshop on the title: How can the CRN promote and work more effectively with practices undertaking research at scale?

There was a huge amount of involvement from everyone who attended, and the CRN would like to thank all of the speakers on the day for their engaging presentations.
CRN Governance explained<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Clinical Research Network (CRN) West of England is one of 15 CRNs across the UK, and each works with Trusts, Primary Care sites, and Public Health sites in their region to support research delivery.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The CRN West of England is hosted by University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, and is governed through a range of regular meetings that are attended by representatives from our primary and secondary care partners.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The four main regular meetings in the CRN governance structure are:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Clinical Divisional Leads

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Operational Management Group

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Executive Management Group

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Partnership Group

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">See the graphics below for a brief explanation of each meeting and how they relate to each other and form part of the CRN structure:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Clinical Divisional Leads (CDLs) are clinical research staff responsible for advising the CRN on the local research portfolio, and are supported by the Clinical Research Specialty Leads (CRSLs), who advise on research happening locally for each disease specialty area. See our full list of CRSLs here.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I deliver research training <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">courses and check that the material we deliver is relevant, up-to-date and of the highest quality. I <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">also coordinate the research training facilitators for each training course.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What does being a facilitator involve?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is about guiding delegates through the training day in a way that enables them to get <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the most out of the session and the most out of each other. It is not just about standing at the front of <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the room relaying information. We create discussions, getting to know who everyone is and their <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">backgrounds in research. We create conversations around the delegates’ shared experiences to help them <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">learn from each other.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In your opinion what difference does research make to the Trust?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A massive difference! Research is one of the core values at University Hospitals Bristol. Being a <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">research active trust brings a lot of opportunities for staff to get involved in research and provides <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">opportunities and potentially huge benefits for patients who opt to take part.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How has research developed over the years?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Before 2009 it was seen as a bit of strange role for a nurse to be getting involved with. Research was <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">seen as an addition to your main role, whereas now I believe research is very much embedded in the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">day to day experience of patients and staff members. In the past mainly doctors would conduct <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">research but now AHPs and other professionals are conducting research too. I also think patients are <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">much more aware of research going on within our hospitals. It is much more accepted and part of <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the day-to-day running of healthcare.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How long have you been working in research?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I started as a research nurse in cardiac research in 2009.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What was your favourite part of working in research?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Meeting patients. As I was hospital based, I had the daily opportunity to be with patients at different <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">stages of their journey. I was able to talk to patients about research opportunities and deliver <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">research that could potentially help with their conditions.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What training courses do you facilitate and what do they involve?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The main course I facilitate is the Valid Informed Consent training. The course involves
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">small groups discussing<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> what each individual’s role is within the consent process.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our delegates have a variety of backgrounds and experiences. This enables people who don’t have <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">as much experience to connect with people who have more experience. The course is also about <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">talking through some of the necessities of valid informed consent including legislation, history and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">decision-making skills. We also talk about the different aspects of the Informed Consent process <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">including how to approach patients and what information needs to be given. We also discuss how <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">we assess capacity, what to do if a patient lacks capacity and how we make that decision. We <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">discuss the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and have some case studies that we talk through and ask the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">delegates to bring a Patient Information Sheet from a study that they are familiar with.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Who are the training courses aimed at?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Different training courses are suited to different individuals in different roles. The Valid Informed <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Consent course is aimed at research staff that are involved in the consent process and receiving <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">consent from a participant. We also run the Principle Investigator (PI) Essentials training course that <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">is geared towards anyone who is either thinking of becoming a PI or is a new PI. We have also got PI <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Masterclass, for people who have been PIs for longer and are perhaps more confident in that role. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The masterclass training is a peer learning session. The Next Steps in Clinical Research course is for a wide range of research staff who perhaps want a more in-depth knowledge about what research is <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">about. We go into quite a lot of detail with this course in order to embed that research knowledge.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We also offer a Let’s Talk Trials course which is a great course for those who are involved in the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">consent process and talking to patients. It is very much about using communication skills and <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">interactions within your research role.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What is Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The GCP course is a basic requirement for anyone who is working in research. It will help give you <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">confidence, especially when you are first stepping into your research role. The qualification is also <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">required to be regularly updated. For this we offer GCP Refresher sessions. But if you haven’t done <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">this course before and you are thinking of stepping into research, completion of this course is a very <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">good place to start.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What do you enjoy most about being a facilitator?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I love being able to walk into a room, seeing 16 people sat in front of me, and getting to know who <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">they are and what they do. I find that I always learn from facilitating. I enjoy interacting with the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">delegates and guiding people through the day. It’s a real passion of mine.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What would you say to staff thinking of signing up for one of these courses?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Do it! It's fantastic! Have a chat to your line manager as you will need their support to be able to attend our courses<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">.
